Education & Training

General

ACTINET members have decided to increase their participation in training at universities and to open their facilities for teaching and training programmes more widely, aiming to build a ‘young European scientific community’ with expertise in actinide sciences.

To allow the next generation of actinide scientists and engineers to gain hands-on experience as a part of their training and to benefit from the knowledge generated within the Network, ACTINET offers a framework for Joint Training and Education Projects. These Joint Training and Education Projects, range from courses and lectures to workshops and annual Summer- and Winter Schools. They contribute to: the exchange of knowledge and expertise, the mobility of researchers and students and the visibility of actinides in the European science community.

As such, the ACTINET major lines of action, concerning Education and Training, are:

  • the promotion of actinide sciences by a set of standard lectures, designed to make European students aware of subjects within actinide science that might be of interested to them,
  • the extension, diversification and specialisation of academic courses at undergraduate, post graduate and post doctoral level, by providing lectures, contacts with researchers, internships, awards, seminars and conferences,
  • the support of thematic schools connected to international conferences or symposia (such as: Actinides, Migration, Journées des Actinides, Symposium on Thermodynamics of Nuclear materials, etc.) and four thematic workshops per year,
  • the establishment of Joint Education and Training Projects, such as the annual ACTINET Summer and ThUL Schools.

Thermodynamics of Nuclear Fuels: presentations of the workshop held in Saclay in Nov. 2006, now available!

The presentations of the workshop on "Thermodynamics of Nuclear Fuels” held in Saclay in November 2006 are now available here!

Summer school

The ACTINET Summer School (AnSS) is alternately organised by ITU and CEA. The AnSS consists of lectures, laboratory visits and laboratory demonstrations, during which the participants can learn and experience the challenges of working with actinides.

The ITU ACTINET Summer Schools cover basic actinide chemistry, physics and material science, while the CEA ACTINET Summer Schools focus each time on a different field of actinide sciences: the first AnSS was organised in June 2004 in Avignon (France) and dealt with “Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Liquid-Liquid Extraction”, the third AnSS will take place in Saclay (France) in 2006 and will deal with “Geochemistry and Migration of Actinides”.

ThUL school

The annual ACTINET ThUL School, established by the ACTINET Theoretical User Lab, provides a limited number of experimentalists with the opportunity to get a first introduction to software and computational methods used for actinide simulation and modelling. The ThUL School offers lectures, exercise sessions and joint experimental/theoretical collaborations, and is supported by online presentation material and discussions with internationally recognized theoretical experts.
