The ACTINET Summer School 2007 focusses on Actinide Science and Applications, and is suitable for students and young researchers who have an interest in basic actinide chemistry, physics and material science.

The lectures, featuring experts from international organisations and ITU, will address the following four topics:

  • basic actinide science ( day 1 ),
  • the nuclear fuel cycle ( day 2 ),
  • reactor fuel under irradiation ( day 3 ),
  • environmental aspects of actinides ( day 4 ).

The Summer School will give its participants a glance at the intriguing science of the 5f elements and their applications in modern society.

The lectures will be given during the morning sessions, whereas the afternoons will be devoted to visits of the laboratories of ITU (controlled area), of the neighbouring German research centre FZK, and of laboratory demonstrations in the following areas:

  • Photoemission Spectroscopy for Actinide Characterisation ( Actinide Research )
  • Transport Properties under Extreme Conditions ( Actinide Research )
  • Thermoconductivity of reactor fuels ( Materials Research )
  • Electron Microscopy of Nuclear Materials ( Materials Research )
  • Fabrication of Advanced Nuclear fuels ( Nuclear fuels )
  • Spent Fuel Corrosion ( Hot Cells Technology )
  • Laser Ablation - ICP-MS as Technique to Characterise Hot Cell Samples( Hot Cells Technology )
  • Safeguards - Chemical Separation in Glove Box ( Nuclear Chemistry )
  • INE-Beamline for Actinide Research at ANKA ( FZK-INE, ANKA )
  • Prototype Vitrification Test Facility ( FZK-INE )
  • Quench Facility ( FZK-IMF )
