Beamline scientist (Vacancies)
Deadline
June 4, 2007Job description
Synchrotron Soleil invites applications for the permanent position of Beamline scientist at its MARS beamline.
The candidate, assigned to the MARS beamline under the responsibility of the beamline leader, will be involved in both scientific and technical aspects:
- He/she will take an active part of the last phase of the beamline construction with a special attention to the sample confinements, the glove boxes and equipments associated to one of analysis methods (diffraction or/and absorption)
- He/she will actively participate to the user support program as well as in the beamline maintenance and development.
- He/she will develop his/her own research program in the actinide or radionuclide field taking advantage of the specific tools implemented on the beamline, both in the course of the in-house research activities and through collaborations that he/she will stimulate in the scientific community.
- He (she) will pay special effort in developing measurements on high radioactive samples
The Beamline scientist wil work on the SOLEIL site at St Aubin in the Essonne department (91), starting from April 2007. The working language is French.
Profile
- The applicant should hold a Ph.D. or an equivalent degree followed by a post-doctorate experience of at least two years
- He/she must have a working experience of several years (minimum two years) inside a "hot" laboratory and must be aware of the safety regulations associated to the manipulation, the study and the transportation of radioactive matter.
- The applicant should have conducted research studies in the field of nuclear issues (environment or wastes or nuclear cycle …) and have a well established experience in diffraction or/and absorption spectroscopy. Previous measurements on radioactive samples using synchrotron sources are considered mandatory
- He/she should be able to support one part of the user community and to work using glove boxes. A technical background of instrumentation will be highly valuable.
- In addition he/she should be fluent in English (written and spoken) and have an adequate knowledge of French.

Company information
Synchrotron SoleilSOLEIL is an optimized third generation 2.75 GeV synchrotron light source under construction 25 km south of Paris. The first 10 beamlines, several of which are using new concepts of undulator sources, are planed to be open to users in 2007. A total of 24 beamlines covering the whole energy range from IR to hard X-rays and providing a complete panel of synchrotron radiation based outstanding experimental tools for physics, chemistry, biology, earth and environmental sciences will be operational in 2010. A permanent staff of 350 people divided among the Experimental, Source and Accelerators Divisions, Technical and Computer Support Services as well as Administration will operate the installation for users and in-house research.
The MARS beamline, MARS being the acronym standing for Multi-Analyses on Radioactive Samples, will support research programs connected to radionuclides in general with the specificity of allowing measurements on highly radioactive samples (up to 18.5 GBq) from a hard X-ray synchrotron beam. This beamline is located on a bending magnet and equipped with three complementary experimental end stations that will be progressively operational from 2007. Methods of characterization are the diffraction, the X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and the X-ray absorption spectroscopy (step by step mode and dispersive mode) in the 3.5 to 36 keV energy range.
The scientific issues from which this dedicated beamline has been setting up, clearly reflect the multidisciplinary of the beamline (biology, chemistry and physics).
