Investigation of U(VI)/U(V) carbonato complexes in aqueous solution by spectro-electrochemical and quantum chemical methods

Goals

The goal of this joint research project is to adapt a spectro-electrochemical cell (recently developed for in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy of actinide solutions at the FZR) to determine the structure of UO2(CO3)35- in aqueous solution. The structural information gained from EXAFS spectroscopy will also be complemented by experimental and quantum chemical investigations of the ligand exchange dynamics in the system.

Expected results

By combining the advantages of electrochemistry with those of EXAFS spectroscopy, this joint research project provides fundamental electrochemical and structural data for the study of redox potential changes of urianium ions, and their migration in soils and sediments.
