UO2 thin films as model fuel systems: preparation, characterisation and investigation of surface reactivity

Goals

The main goal of this joint research project is to investigate surface corrosion reactions of spent fuel, by using thin films of doped actinide oxides as model fuel systems.

Expected results

The results of this joint research project will be the following:

  • after proof of feasibility, reproducibility and reliability, thin film model systems will foster reaction-modelling activities;
  • single effect studies will give further insight into the surface corrosion reaction mechanisms;
  • it will become possible to experimentally obtain valuable benchmark data for the assessment of spent fuel disposal.
