Performance and coordination structure of N-donor extracting agents for partitioning of trivalent actinides from lanthanides

Status

Terminated - Planned from July 2005 till January 2007

Goals

The goal of this joint research project is to investigate Am(III), Cm(III) and Eu(III) complexes of N-donor partitioning ligands, by using EXAFS and TRLFS. In particular, the main objectives are:

  • to establish whether the An(III) vs. Ln(III) selectivities of carefully chosen N-donor extractants manifest themselves in coordination structure differences;
  • to link structure to liquid-liquid extraction performance for U(III), Am(III) and Cm(III), and to determine whether U(III) can be used as a good model for An(III) (mainly for Am(III) and Cm(III)).

Expected results

The results of this joint research project will contribute to the assessment of the applicability of U(III) as a model for studying partitioning behavior of Am(III) and Cm(III). They will also provide the necessary input for the design of better extracting agents for An(III) partitioning (in the context of the European Partitioning & Transmutation strategy).
