Studies of the Chemical Forms of Actinides and Fission Products Adsorbed on Nanocrystalline Magnetite
Status
| Terminated |
- Planned from March 2006 till September 2007 |
Goals
The goal of this joint research project is to study the chemical forms of actinides (U, Np) and fission products (Tc, Se), adsorbed on the surface of nanocrystalline Fe3O4. By combining XAFS, FT-IR, and PIXE measurements, information about the oxidation states and the chemical bonds involved in actinides and fission products species, will be further investigated. The main objectives are:
- to determine the nature of the association of radionuclides (such as: U, Np, Tc) with magnetite nanocrystalline particles;
- to elucidate the kinetics of radionuclides immobilisation at nanocrystalline magnetite;
- to develop the sonochemical synthesis of magnetite nanocrystalline particles with tailored properties.
Expected results
Although this joint research project is mainly devoted to fundamental chemistry of actinides and fission products, its kinetic and spectroscopic data could also lead to the development of a new method for radioactive waste management.
