Microfocusing capability at the INE beamline

Status

Terminated - Planned from March 2006 till September 2007

Goals

The goal of this joint research project is to upgrade the INE-Beamline with a microfocusing optic. It can be considered as an extension of a previous joint research project (JRP 01-02), which served to provide the INE-Beamline with optical components for spatially resolved speciation studies.

Expected results

The upgrade of the INE-Beamline provides Europe with a unique facility for actinide research. It will be the first European spectroscopy beamline that offers both microfocus capabilities and licensing to work with actinides well above the free limit. Besides, the intrinsic advantages of a focused X-ray beam are:

  • the study of smaller sample volumes;
  • the combination of imaging with spectroscopic techniques;
  • the investigation of buried phases, which is possible through the combination of spatial resolution and the high penetration depth of X-rays.
