Sorption of An(III) on mineral-oxide surfaces. A quantum chemical study

Goals
The aim of this joint research project is to investigate, by quantum chemical calculations, the sorption of trivalent actinides and lanthanides on selected mineral-oxide surfaces in aqueous solution. The derived structural and energetic information on the sorption sites and the adsorbed ion will complement experimental findings, and will enable the validation of surface complexation models (SCM).
Expected results
The results of this joint research project will contribute to the assessment of nuclear waste repositories and put safety studies on a more solid base. In particular, the data will provide information on the release of radionuclides to the environment after the intrusion of water.
