Complexation of U, Np and Pu ions with organic ligands: combined quantum chemical and EXAFS study

Status

Terminated - Planned from September 2006 till September 2007

Goals

The objective of this joint research project is to elucidate the complexation behaviour of uranium, neptunium, and plutonium with organic acids, by using combined quantum chemical and EXAFS methods. The study of neptunium will be performed using several different oxidation states, while also redox behaviour will be discussed.

Expected results

The complexation of actinide ions with organic acids is one of the major processes of actinide migration in geological media. The outcome of this joint research project is expected to have a direct impact on nuclear waste disposal issues.

The results on the redox behaviour of the organo-actinide complex will also contribute to the safety assessment of geological nuclear waste disposal, since the redox thermodynamics of the actinides significantly change with the presence of organic ligands.
