Investigation of the solubility and solution chemistry of neptunyl(V) and uranyl (VI) in the presence of iodate

Status

Terminated - Planned from December 2006 till December 2007

Goals

The aim of this joint research project is to study the interaction between uranyl/neptunyl cations and iodate anions in solution, as well as actinyl solubility under a range of aqueous experimental conditions. In particular, the elevated temperature and pH environments, which can be expected in an underground repository for high-level nuclear waste, are investigated.

Expected results

The results of this joint research project will contribute to the knowledge of the release of the long lived radioisotopes 'uranium' (primarily 235/238U), 'neptunium' (237Np) and 'iodine' (129I) into the environment. This is a key concern for the long term storage of nuclear materials in waste repositories. In addition, the project also provides data for post-closure RPA calculations.
