Crystallographic and Local Structure in Zirconia Based Fuels and Targets
Status
| Terminated |
- Planned from April 2007 till October 2008 |
Goals
The long-range and particularly the short-range local environment of the atoms in Yttria Stabilised Zirconia (YSZ) transmutation fuels will be investigated by a variety of complementary techniques (XRD, EXAFS, NMR). The aim is to determine the local coordination environments of the cations and the vacancy distributions associated with the anionic structure upon An substitution using element specific spectroscopies. The evolution of this local structure will be assessed as a function of accumulated a-radiation damage.
Expected results
The results will be compared with molecular dynamics modelling of the heavy recoil process using realistic energies in the 30-70 keV range.
