Speciation of actinides and fission products nanoparticles embedded into the mesoporous matrices

Status

Terminated - Planned from October 2006 till March 2008

Goals

The project is focused on the studies of the chemical forms of actinides (uranium, neptunium) and fission products (selenium) incorporated into the ordered mesoporous matrices (silica and alumina). The particles insertion will be performed using chemical deposition under power ultrasound. By combining XAFS, TEM, XPS, powder XRD and PIXE techniques, the relationship between particles size, chemical composition and their physicochemical properties and chemical reactivity will be established for U(IV), U(VI), Np(V), Np(IV), Np(VI) and Se(0).

Expected results

Expected impact on applied issues in the field of nuclear fission energy

This project is mainly devoted to a fundamental chemistry of actinides and fission products. However, it could be possible to develop the new approach to radioactive waste management on the basis of obtained data.

Expected impact on long term integration

The project supported by ACTINET will allow to improve scientific co-operation between CNAB/CNRS, CEA/Valrhô and ROBL/ESRF in the field of radiochemistry. Moreover, the obtained data are essential in both understanding of radionuclides behaviour in the environment and optimising of the low activity radioactive waste management.
