ACTINET Sorption Board - Knowlegde Infrastructure and Education

Status

Terminated - Planned from March 2005 till February 2008

Goals

Research and published results for sorption models, mainly surface complexation models (SCM), but also including ion exchange processes, is rapidly growing. However, there is a slow knowledge transfer into the application area so far. This may be due to a lack of recommended data sets, several competing model approaches, perceived complexity, missing user friendliness and proof of reliability. So far neither an internationally accepted thermodynamic sorption model and database nor respective guidelines, data quality criteria or a commonly agreed-upon standard model exists. The objective of this project is to address these shortcomings. With international coordination being a prerequisite for success in the sorption area and implementation of SCM, this project will set up an efficient organization on a European level - the ACTINET Sorption Board - being a module of the ACTINET beyond the 6th R&D framework.

Expected results

To achieve the objectives a dedicated web area inside the ACTINET web portal (electronic information infrastructure) including databases, discussion groups, mailing lists, directories of expertise and experts, and respective link collections will be set-up. Workshops and lectures will be held to determine and implement quality control criteria and standardization, but also to spread the knowledge.
To achieve these objectives a parallel proposal in the Joint Research Area, Scope 2: "Actinides in the geological environment” will facilitate data exchange, standardization and provide recommendations of experimental and modelling procedures, approaches, codes and models, as well as blind prediction exercise probing the various models and database.
