Plutonium Futures "the Science" 2008 (project acronym: Pu2008)

Status

Terminated - Planned from July 2008 till July 2008

Goals

"Plutonium Futures – The Science" is a series of conferences providing an international forum for the presentation and discussion of current research on the physical and chemical properties of plutonium and other actinide elements. The scope of the conference ranges from the complexities of condensed matter physics in plutonium to important practical issues such as trace detection of plutonium in the environment. In bringing together people from this diverse range of disciplines to illustrate and enhance capabilities and interests, the conference aims to discuss the current and emerging science of plutonium and actinide materials.

Expected results

Expected impact on applied issues in the field of nuclear fission energy

Next generation nuclear reactors are designed to efficiently use and recycle nuclear fuels in order to conserve precious resources. Safety and waste management, as well as resistance to proliferation, are issues that will be addressed internationally to enable long-term sustainability of nuclear power. By providing an international forum for the presentation and discussion of current research on the physical and chemical properties of plutonium and other actinide elements, the "Plutonium Futures – The Science" series of conferences aims at bringing together people from diverse range of disciplines to illustrate and enhance capabilities and interests.

Expected impact on long term integration

Organizing a major plutonium conference in Europe should reduce the fragmentation between the European community of actinide sciences and beyond, i.e. worldwide, and stimulate similar related events organization and collaborations and joint projects. It can be also seen as a major output of Actinet in terms of European integration.
