Low temperature (liquid he) adiabatic calorimeterStatus
GoalsThe goal of this project is the transfer to the European Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU) of two low-temperature calorimeters (CAL V and CAL VIII) from Chemical Thermodynamics Group of Utrecht State University (USU). These machines would complete the experimental thermodynamic-measurement facilities available at ITU, which would then cover the full temperature range between liquid He (about 2 K) and the boiling point of highmelting materials (up to 7000 K). Such facilities provide unique investigation possibilities on radioactive materials, including actinide elements and spent nuclear fuel. The sample holder of least one of the two CAL V – CAL VIII machines would actually be sealed in a glovebox suited for handling radioactive materials, thus permitting measurements unique in this domain. Expected resultsExpected impact on applied issues in the field of nuclear fission energy Using these low-T adiabatic calorimeters for the investigation of innovative nuclear fuel and nuclear materials in general will produce novel experimental thermodynamic data of fundamental importance for the new Generation Four nuclear fission systems. Expected impact on long term integration Co-operation among the partners of this project constitutes part of the launching of a wider research network on fundamental properties of actinide materials and innovative nuclear fuels. Such a network is developing point research both experimental and theoretical. Reports |
