Upgrade of the ITU's Physical property Measurement with a VSM and AC magnetometry systems

Status

Ongoing - Planned from September 2007 till September 2009

Goals

The project is proposed to upgrade the Physical Property Measurement System available at the ITU pooled facility for the study of solid-state properties of actinides compounds, with a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) + furnace (up to 1000K) and an AC magnetometry system. The upgrade should extend the capability of the facility offered to internal and external users and allow to deal with emerging features in actinide materials that can not be fully addressed with the today available equipment.

Expected results

Expected impact on applied issues in the field of nuclear fission energy

Physical basic electronic properties of actinides at low and high temperatures and their understanding. These properties are at the core of our understanding of actinide materials properties and provide basic parameters necessary for developing and assessing models.

Expected impact on long term integration

The "upgraded" facility will allow to address new emerging issues (superconductivity, spin glasses, superparamagnetism) in actinide condensed matter physics and be put at disposal to the European Community through collaborations, transnational access and pooled facilities programmes. It will be a truly unique facility having worldwide only one equivalent in US.
