Development of chemical, electrochemical, spectroscopic and mass spectrometric methods for speciation of plutonium ions

Goals
The goal of this joint research project is to develop a pool of reliable methods for the speciation of plutonium in various solutions. As new techniques, electrospray mass spectrometry (ES-MS) and capillary electrophoresis (CE), coupled to ICP-MS or laser resonance ionisation mass spectrometry, will be introduced.
Expected results
The results of this joint research project will have an impact on:
- the tools for reliable speciation of plutonium in aqueous solutions;
- the methods to characterise and to quantify the colloidal fraction of plutonium;
- the data on plutonium complexation with inorganic and organic ligands;
- the experience to overcome experimental artefacts and to disambiguate research results in plutonium chemistry.
