Aquatic chemistry and thermodynamics of actinides: Solubility, hydrolysis and complexation of tetravalent actinides

Status

Terminated - Planned from October 2004 till May 2006

Goals

The main objective of this joint research project is to provide sound thermodynamic data on tetravalent actinides in aqueous solution (including: solubility products of various amorphous and crystalline solids, as well as hydrolysis- and complexation constants for selected inorganic ligands). The formation, constitution and stability of true colloids of Zr(IV) and An(IV) oxyhydroxides will also be studied to elucidate their influence on the solubility of the tetravalent elements.

Expected results

The thermodynamic data on tetravalent actinides fill important gaps in thermodynamic databases. Among others, they will be used as input data for geochemical modelling in safety- and performance assessment of nuclear waste repositories.
