Properties of nuclear fuel/water interfaces under ion and electron beam irradiation relevant to the radiolysis effects on long term spent nuclear fuel storage

Goals

The goal of this joint research project is to identify the basic mechanisms by which radiolysis contributes to the evolution of spent fuel/water interfaces. Several approaches will be used to determine the specific features of gamma-, beta- and alpha radiolysis.

Expected results

The results of this joint research project will provide useful information concerning the impact of the long term storage of spent fuel on the environment. In particular, they will contribute to the understanding of the release of uranium and other actinides or radionuclides at the final degradation stage of storage containers.
