Reduction of actinides by inorganic or organic bound iron (II)
Status
| Terminated |
- Planned from June 2006 till June 2008 |
Goals
The overall objective of this joint research project is to study actinide (U, Np) reduction capacities of host rock specific minerals and/or organic macromolecules, under near-natural conditions. Spectro-microscopically techniques (XPS, EXAFS) will be used together with autoradiography to differentiate between adsorbed, co-precipitated or reduced actinide species.
Expected results
The results of this joint research project will lead to a detailed process understanding of radionuclide redox state and sorption/reduction capacity/kinetics, as a function of solid phase chemistry (ferrous iron and/or reduced sulfur content). As redox processes and their kinetics play a key role for the prediction of radionuclide migration/retention, this project will contribute to the understanding of the basic processes of nuclear waste disposal.
