Development of analytical tools for speciation of plutonium and uranium ions: focus on capillary electrophoresis coupled to ICP-MS

Status

Terminated - Planned from October 2006 till March 2008

Goals

This joint research project deals with the development of tools for the speciation of plutonium and uranium in aqueous solution. Contrary to the former JRP 01-22, the work is more focused on the development, adaptation and optimisation of coupling CE to ICP-MS, while it is also extended to uranium. The aim is to deliver tools for the acquisition of reliable data on the redox behaviour of both elements.

Expected results

The results of this joint research project will enhance future investigations of the behaviour of plutonium and uranium in natural solutions. Reliable data on plutonium complexation with inorganic and organic ligands will be acquired, as well as experiences to overcome experimental artefacts and to disambiguate results. As a result, this project will enhance trust in the methods for the safety analysis of radioactive waste disposal.
