Study of the interaction of Cm(III) and Eu(III) on a synthetic montmorillonite; effect of compaction
Status
| Terminated |
- Planned from September 2006 till March 2008 |
Goals
During this joint research project, the effect of compaction on the retention properties of clay material will be investigated, with respect to actinides. The scientific objectives are:
- to study Eu(III)/Cm(III) speciation and sorption behaviour in clay suspensions of high solid to liquid ratio (S/L) and to compare those observations with those obtained in dispersed systems with low S/L ratio;
- to derive a sorption model applicable to describe metal ion sorption in compacted clay;
- to assess the influence of clay Fe content on Eu(III)/Cm(III) sorption and surface speciation.
Expected results
A better process understanding of the effect of compaction on the sorption of contaminants in clay materials will enhance the capability of resolving the issue of nuclear waste disposal (which is currently perceived as the main obstacle for continued use of nuclear energy in the European energy mix).
