Development of a thermodynamic database for advanced nuclear fuels
Status
| Terminated |
- Planned from February 2005 till August 2006 |
Goals
The objective of this joint research project is to join competences in nuclear materials and thermodynamic modelling to build a common predictive tool, allowing the assessment of both thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams of advanced fuels. This ‘thermodynamic database for advanced nuclear fuels' will be developed according to the CALPHAD method and will contribute to:
- the prediction of possible chemical interactions between fuel components in the solid, liquid and/or gas state (in different atmospheres);
- the prediction of gas partial pressures;
- the localization of the fission products in different fuels.
Expected results
The results of this joint research project will allow to:
- deliver of a tool for thermodynamic calculations in irradiated advanced fuels;
- bring essential input data for the choice of the fuel materials for the HTR and GFR reactors;
- define an experimental program to bring new experimental data in most key systems of advanced fuels;
- predict the physicochemical behaviour of the irradiated fuel materials in normal and accidental conditions.
