Thermo-chemical modelling of targets for minor actinide transmutation

Goals

The goal of this joint research project is to establish thermochemical models for the description of transmutation targets chemistry in function of temperature, burnup and oxygen potential. A thermochemical database will be compiled for the main fuel components and fission products.

Expected results

In short term, the models will be usable for the performance- and safety analysis of irradiation experiments of transmutation targets. In medium term, they could be used for the selection of the fuels for a prototype accelerator driven transmutation facility. In the long term, they could form the basis of thermo-chemical databases for the licensing of minor actinide transmutation targets and fuels.
