FUELBASE: a thermodynamic database for advanced nuclear fuels

Status

Terminated - Planned from September 2006 till March 2008

Goals

The goal of this joint research project is to continue the development of FUELBASE (see: JRP 02-27): a thermodynamic database and a flexible tool for thermodynamic calculations on advanced nuclear fuels for HTR and GFR systems.

In the first step of the project, the thermodynamic descriptions of all the binary sub-systems have been included, either from an existing published database or from own assessment from available experimental data. In the second step of the work, the following ternary systems will be assessed:

  • U-Pu-O, U-Pu-C, U-Pu-N, respectively representatives of mixed oxide, carbide, nitride of uranium and plutonium;
  • U-Si-C, U-Ti-C, U-Ti-N systems to study chemical interaction of respectively [ UC / SiC ];
  • [ UC / TiC ] [ UN / TiN ] couples for GFR possible concept.

The next step will then be to add the fission products to describe the chemistry of advanced irradiated fuels.

Expected results

The results of this joint research project will allow to:

  • deliver of a tool for thermodynamic calculations in irradiated advanced fuels;
  • bring essential input data for the choice of the fuel materials for the HTR and GFR reactors;
  • define an experimental program to bring new experimental data in most key systems of advanced fuels;
  • predict the physicochemical behaviour of the irradiated fuel materials in normal and accidental conditions.
