Excess properties of actinide fluoride solutions

Goals

The goal of this project is the investigation of excess properties of solutions of the actinide halides by means of ab-initio calculations. The system ThF4-UF4 will be studied by theoretical and experimental techniques that will yield data on the mixing properties of the liquid and solid solutions. For the theoretical studies ab-initio static and dynamic calculations will be performed. The experimental studies will focus on calorimetric studies of the phase diagram and, if possible, the mixing enthalpies.

Expected results

The results will be compared and will be used to assess the ThF4-UF4 system using the CALPHAD method for optimisation of phase diagrams.
