Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique

The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), is a public organisation for scientific and technological research, under the authority of the French Ministry for Research. Its budget representing one-fourth of the total civil research spending in France (€ 2,5 billion in 2003), and its overall staff counting 26,136 members, of which 42,6% are women, the CNRS is the largest fundamental research organisation in Europe.

CNRS’ proper laboratories, as well as those it maintains jointly with universities, other research organizations and the industry, are not only located throughout France, but also overseas, such as its international joint laboratories located in several countries.

The main tasks of CNRS are:

  • knowledge development,
  • knowledge transfer and -application in enterprises and all domains contributing to the progress of society,
  • dissemination of information and of a scientific and technical culture to the public at large,
  • participation in early training, long-life training, training by research, and management of research quality (in which CNRS especially addresses to young people).

Measured by the amount of human and material resources CNRS commits to scientific research, or by the great range of disciplines in which its scientists conduct their research, CNRS can be considered as the hub of research activity in France and as an important breeding ground for scientific and technological innovation.

The CNRS encourages cooperation between scientific fields and fosters several interdisciplinary programmes, among which nuclear waste management. The group of CNRS laboratories, involved in the ACTINET-Network of Excellence, are partners of two Research Groups called NOMADE and PARIS. Their chemists, physicists and earth sciences experts concentrate on research fields related to:

  • matrixes and targets for minor actinides: synthesis, structural studies, numerical modelling and behaviour of matrixes (mainly leaching, external and internal irradiation, radiolysis)
  • actinides separation processes (hydrometallurgy, pyrochemistry) and radionuclides migration through the ground (solid/solution interface)

Several members of these research groups are strongly involved in training related to actinide sciences and nuclear energy problems. Since the beginning of the ACTINET Network of Excellence, the laboratories of CNRS have been involved, and now contribute to ten different ACTINET work packages covering the 3 scopes of the Network.
