Czech Technical University in Prague

Founded in 1707, the Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) is the oldest technical university in Central Europe. With 1,500 members of academic staff working in about 150 research groups it is the largest technical university in the Czech Republic and also one of the largest research institutions in the country.

The University pursues research in many fields, namely: civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, telecommunications, automation, informatics, computer science, applied mathematics, nuclear sciences, physical engineering, architectural theory and modelling, transportation sciences, biomedical engineering etc.

Two departments of the Czech Technical University closely collaborate in their research of actinides: the Department of Nuclear Chemistry and the Centre for Radiochemistry and Radiation Chemistry. Research within these two departments concerns:

  • Development of separation methods for actinides, particularly based on sorption and extraction processes
  • Determination of actinides in environmental samples
  • Studies of speciation and behaviour of actinides in the environment
  • Complexation of actinides with humic substances
  • Analysis and modelling of interaction of actinides with clay and rocks
  • Laboratory study and modelling of migration of actinides in engineered or geological barriers.

Several of these topics became a part of work packages in two scopes of ACTINET and will be pursued in the frame of joint projects. The Department of Nuclear Chemistry delivers full curriculum in Nuclear and Radiochemistry at undergraduate and graduate level including chemistry and physics of actinides and Nuclear Fuel Technology. For ACTINET, it is offering student laboratory training in Radiochemistry and Radiation Chemistry.
