Forschungszentrum Dresden Rossendorf e.V. |
Forschungszentrum Dresden Rossendorf e.V. (FZR, now FZD) was founded in 1992 as a registered non-profit institution with a permanent staff of 550 members, supported by the authorities of the Free State of Saxony and the Federal Government of Germany. FZD pursues interdisciplinary application-oriented basic research in the fields of structure of matter, life sciences, as well as environment and safety.
FZD’s Institute for Radiochemistry (IRC) conducts applied basic research on the fields of radiochemistry and radioecology. The motivation and background of the work are environmental processes relevant for the installation of nuclear waste repositories, for the residues and remediation of uranium mining and milling sites, and for radioactive contaminations caused by nuclear accidents and fallout.
Concerning research in the field of actinides, IRC concentrates on:
- radionuclides solution behaviour and their speciation in environmental matrices at very low concentrations
- solid phase characterizations
- investigations of colloids
- actinide interactions with microbes and biofilms
- developing and parameterising reactive transport models
- remediation measures at radioactively contaminated sites
FZD contributes in various ways to the ACTINET-Network of Excellence. Most important is the provision of two research labs to the Pooled Facility Group: The X-ray absorption beam line at the ESRF in Grenoble/France dedicated to actinide research, and the laser spectroscopy laboratory at the site in Rossendorf. Furthermore FZD is presented in the Executive Committee of ACTINET and has successfully launched (or participated in) several Joint Research Proposals and Education & Training Activities.
