Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH

Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (FZJ) was founded in 1956 as an independent science and research institution, operated by the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

FZJ, with a permanent staff of 4,200, is a member of the ‘Hermann von Helmholtz Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren (HGF)’, a representative association of 16 German research centres, and works on five priority areas:

  • structure of matter and material research
  • information technology
  • life sciences
  • environmental protection research
  • energy technology.

In the field of energy technology, FZJ is engaged in a broad spectrum of different techniques like nuclear fission, nuclear fusion, solar energy, fuel cells, hydrogen technologies, rational use of energy and related analyses.

The ‘Institute of Safety Research and Reactor Technology (ISR)’ of the FZJ will take part in the research of the ACTINET-Network of Excellence. The institute has two sections that are mainly involved in R&D concerning the safety of nuclear reactors and nuclear waste management. Recent topics directly linked to the ACTINET programme are:

  • mobilisation/immobilisation of radionuclides in a deep geological repository for spent nuclear fuel
  • immobilisation of actinides in ceramic waste forms
  • impact of proton and neutron radiation on actinides and ceramics
  • synthesis and characterisation of organic extractants for actinides.
