Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz |
The University of Mainz (JOGU) was founded in 1477 by the Elector and Archbishop Diether von Isenburg. At present JOGU is one of the largest universities in Germany with approximately 35,000 students from more than 130 nations. Furthermore, 2,000 researchers and engineers teach and perform research in more than 150 institutes and clinics. Together with the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, which are located at the university campus, JOGU is the scientific center of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Fritz Strassmann, who discovered nuclear fission together with Otto Hahn in 1938, founded the Department of Chemistry in 1946. Teaching and research activities of its Institute of Nuclear Chemistry cover the full range of nuclear chemistry and radiochemistry. The operation of the research reactor TRIGA Mainz contributes to the uniqueness of the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry in Germany. The research program at the reactor covers a wide range of basic and applied science in nuclear chemistry and nuclear and particle physics. The reactor is also used for neutron activation analysis and for education and training of students and technical personnel.
Research activities within the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry at the University of Mainz are focused on:
- heavy ion reactions, chemistry of the heaviest elements
- investigation of nuclear structure using radioactive ion beams
- ultra trace detection of radiotoxic elements
- speciation of actinides in natural aquatic systems and on mineral surfaces
- radiopharmaceutical chemistry
- nuclear astrophysics.
Equipment made available for the ACTINET-Network:
- research reactor TRIGA Mainz
- laser facility for resonant ionization mas spectrometry (RIMS)
- detectors for gamma-spectroscopy and low-level alpha-particle spectroscopy
- X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) system
