The Geological Institute, University of Copenhagen (KU) is a part of the Geocenter, which has more than 500 research, teaching and technical staff and 1000 students at BSc, MSc and PhD levels. Instrumental facilities exist for research in all aspects of Earth Science.

The NanoGeoScience group focuses on elucidating the molecular-scale processes that control the uptake and immobilisation of contaminants by geological materials through application of state-of-the-art surface sensitive techniques. The group is currently involved in ACTAF, a 5th Framework Euratom project, to study the fundamental behaviour of Eu(III) in calcite as a model for trivalent actinide uptake in secondary phases. Other projects funded by national and industrial sources examine the immobilisation potential of the Fe(II)- and Fe(III)-oxides. The group's active collaboration within this network, and with groups in complementary fields from Europe, Canada and US, insures international interaction for students and researchers.
