Svensk Kärnbränslehanterng AB (Future member) |
Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB (Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co) was formed in the early 70’s and work began on planning how to take care of Sweden's spent nuclear fuel. The company is owned by the four Swedish power companies and is tasked with managing and disposing of radioactive waste from the Swedish nuclear power plants in a manner that complies with extremely stringent standards.
Today SKB has a system for managing the radioactive waste: a central interim storage for spent nuclear fuel (Clab) in Oskarshamn and a final disposal for radioactive operational waste (SFR) in Forsmark. SKB now has to find a location for, and then build, a final repository for spent nuclear fuel. This is a highly technical task involving extensive research and development work. It is also an issue that is closely linked to the democratic decision-making process at both local and national level.
The goal of the research conducted by SKB is to help understand the long-term changes that take place in a final repository and how they affect the repository's ability to isolate the spent nuclear fuel.
