University of Cambridge

The University of Cambridge (UCAM) is one of the leading universities in the world. Throughout its 800 year history, UCAM has made significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge. At present, the University of Cambridge has a staff of around 8,000 working in over 100 departments. It pioneers work in the understanding of diseases, the creation of new materials, advances in telecommunications and research into the origins of the universe.

The Cambridge Centre for Ceramic Immobilisation (C3i) is a part of the Mineral Physics Group at UCAM. The 7 members of the permanent academic staff, 4 externally funded senior research fellows, 5 post-docs and 15 Phd students focus on:

  • the fundamental science of radiation damage within ceramic materials (quantifying the amount of damage that occurs following radiation events, the accumulation of the damage and the origin of non-linear swelling through percolation processes and the effect of composition on radiation resistance)
  • the influence of percolation transitions on the durability of ceramic materials that contain actinides (providing underpinning science for the production of immobilisation matrices for actinides, inert matrix fuels and ceramic transmutation targets)
  • the simulation of radiation damage events and quantification of radiation damage (such as amorphous x-ray scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance).

In addition C3i has facilities for supercritical leaching and considerable expertise in the behaviour of natural analogue materials.

UCAM currently leads two Actinet programmes to examine Pu containing ceramics and glasses by NMR and a workshop to examine further possibilities of NMR research on actinides. UCAM also participates in the modelling of radioactive decay events.
