University of Cyprus

The Actinide Research Lab belongs to the Chemistry Department of the University of Cyprus (established in 1989) and has two main objectives: promotion of scientific knowledge and research in Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry, and the creation of skilled graduates in the respective area.

Teaching activities include courses within the undergraduate (as part of the elective course, Environmental Chemistry) and graduate programme (as independent course, Special Topics of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry and as part of the course, Aquatic Chemistry of Heavy Metal Ions). Research activities include experimental and literature work as part of Diploma, Master or PhD Thesis. The experimental work at the Actinide Research Lab is performed using the natural actinides thorium and uranium, as well as lanthanide ions (e.g. Eu, Sm, Nd) and research interest is focused on the aquatic chemistry of the corresponding species (e.g. hydrolysis, carbonate and humate complexation, formation of ternary complexes and adsorption on surfaces). The research activities include also investigation of the interaction of the light actinides and lanthanides with organic chelators of pharmaceutical interest and analysis of thorium and uranium in natural samples.
