Nuclear fission is likely to contribute substantially to the European energetic mix in the future, as an option to reduce the energy dependency of the European Union, while contributing to the limitation of greenhouse gas emission.

Although the nuclear industry has come to maturity and operates plants with a high level of safety and efficiency, a major issue requiring intensive R&D remains a broadly agreed approach to waste management, and more generally the exploration of new concepts for nuclear energy generation that make better use of fissile material and generate less waste.

In this context, actinide sciences play an important role for the further development of a dynamic, competitive and sustainable knowledge based nuclear industry. Because of its strategic importance, research on actinides must be reinforced. Access to and use of the available facilities must be made easier, and training capacities must be optimized at the European scale.

This is the objective of the European Network for Actinide Sciences ACTINET established in 2004, with the support of the European Commission under the sixth framework programme EURATOM.

ACTINET brings together nuclear science and technology research centres and universities.

Its goals are i) to facilitate the use by the European scientific community of the major facilities allowing to work on actinides, ii) to improve researchers mobility, in particular between academic institutions and national nuclear laboratories, and iii) to promote excellence by supporting selected joint research projects and activities in education and training.

Its scope includes the physics and chemistry of actinides in solid or liquid state, in the geological environment, and in materials under irradiation, in relation with the operational issues raised by the use of nuclear energy (in pile fuel behaviour, back-end of the fuel cycle including geological repository of waste, etc.)

During its first phase (2004-2007), ACTINET was concentrated on structuring at the European scale the scientific community working on actinides. It is now time to strengthen the communication and cooperation between this scientific community and the various stakeholders, in particular the industrial companies operating in the field of nuclear energy, the waste management agencies, the regulatory bodies, the other international organisations…

This is the major objective of the “stakeholders’ day” organised on October 24, which will take place at the THON Hotel in Brussels (http://www.thonhotels.be/brusselscitycentre), and will provide an opportunity to exchange information and views on the role of actinide sciences in the field of nuclear energy, and on the role of a structure like ACTINET.

You are kindly invited to participate to this meeting organised by ACTINET in Brussels on 24 October 2007.

Beyond a presentation of the objectives, organisation, and first achievements of the network, the meeting will offer the major stakeholders the opportunity to present their expectations in the field of actinide sciences.
