Pooling Facilities

ACTINET Pooled Facilities are laboratories and facilities dedicated to actinide research in Europe. The objective is to make them more accessible to researchers coming from member institutions of the ACTINET Consortium, and to promote the involvement of young scientists, notably, from universities. In this way, research in actinide sciences will be catalysed.

Theoretical User Lab

In the same spirit as the pooling of experimental facilities, ACTINET brings together the tools and expertise, available in European actinide modelling and simulation, into a Theoretical User Lab (ThUL).

The ThUL provides a platform to promote the use of computational tools for modelling and simulation, and to distribute information on computer resources and software. The ThUL also organises a theoretical ThUL School for experimentalists, various courses and joint experimental/theoretical workshops.

Joint Research Projects

Joint research projects, proposed by ACTINET members, are supported by the Network after an extensive evaluation by a Scientific Advisory Committee. The support essentially consists of access to the pooled facilities and funding for mobility. Based on a profound understanding of the complex phenomena that occur in nuclear fuels, waste processing and disposal conditions, these Joint Research Projects are designed to provide far-reaching solutions to the problems currently encountered in nuclear energy.

Education and Training

Enhanced mobility and infrastructure availability for Joint Research Projects allows the next generation of actinide scientists and engineers to gain hands-on experience as a part of their training. The Network supports stronger participation of national laboratories in training at universities, as well as a greater use of facilities for teaching and training. Furthermore, ACTINET has established a new, annual Summer School on actinides, ACTINET thematic workshops and courses in actinide sciences.

Use and Dissemination of Knowledge

ACTINET actively ensures the dissemination of knowledge and information within the Network and towards potential end-users (waste management agencies, nuclear industry, energy utilities, etc.). Furthermore, ACTINET aims to enhance the general public's awareness regarding the contribution of actinide research to the sustainable use of nuclear energy in the future.
